Google has a new, official student offer for the 2026–27 school year. Eligible college students in the United States can receive 12 months of Google AI Pro at no cost. The offer includes 5 TB of storage and expanded access to Gemini, but it also requires student verification, a valid payment method, and attention to the paid renewal at the end of the trial.
The safest place to start is the Google One student offer page. Sign in with the personal Google Account you intend to keep. The plan name, trial end date, and renewal price shown there are the terms that apply to your account.
What the 2026 U.S. offer includes
Google announced the current program on August 19, 2026. Its official student announcement says the U.S. plan includes:
- Google AI Pro for 12 months at no cost;
- 5 TB of Google storage;
- four times the Gemini usage limits of non-AI subscribers;
- access to Gemini Spark;
- Gemini in Google apps such as Gmail and Google Docs;
- Google Health Premium and other plan benefits.
You must redeem the offer by December 31, 2026. Google lists the regular renewal price as $19.99 per month after the trial unless you cancel. A qualifying payment method is required when you enroll.
“Expanded access” does not mean unlimited use. Individual Gemini products have their own limits, features can change, and the signed-in plan page is more current than a screenshot or a year-old tutorial.
This is also different from the offer outside the United States. Eligible students in more than 140 other markets receive Google AI Plus for 12 months, with 400 GB of storage and a lower paid renewal. If you study outside the U.S., a page promising Pro and 5 TB may be describing the wrong market.
A five-minute eligibility check
Google’s current student-offer help page is more useful than guessing from an .edu address. For the U.S. 12-month Pro trial, you need to be enrolled at a higher-education institution in the United States and complete SheerID verification with a valid school email address. You also need a personal Google Account, a Google Payments account, and a qualifying form of payment.
Check these account conditions before beginning:

New and existing Google One members may be eligible. Existing AI Pro or Ultra subscriptions can affect when the switch occurs, so read the transition message instead of assuming the free period starts immediately.
Leaving a family group can remove shared storage or benefits. Do not leave one merely to test the page. First review what you would lose and confirm that the student offer is available to your account.
How to claim it without losing track of renewal
- Go to one.google.com/ai-student and sign in with your personal account.
- Confirm that the offer says Google AI Pro and 12 months, not Google AI Plus or a shorter standard trial.
- Start the SheerID flow and use your valid school email. Provide accurate, current enrollment information if additional documentation is requested.
- Return to Google One after verification and review the subscription checkout.
- Before accepting, record the trial end date, renewal price, included storage, and cancellation terms.
- After activation, open Google One membership settings and verify the next billing date.
Set a reminder at least one week before the trial ends. A calendar reminder is more dependable than expecting a promotional email to arrive at the right time.
Google says the membership normally converts to regular paid AI Pro when the student offer ends, except where applicable law requires additional consent. Google will provide advance notice, but you remain responsible for checking the subscription status and cancelling if you do not want the paid plan.
When the claim page says you are not eligible
The error usually comes from one of four boundaries. Treat them separately.
The student offer does not appear. Verify that you signed in to the intended personal account. Check family-group status, partner billing, and whether an existing AI subscription is still in a paid billing period.
SheerID cannot verify your school or enrollment. Use the institution’s official name and the school email issued to you. If SheerID requests documents, submit current records that clearly match your name and school. Google support cannot turn an unsupported institution into an eligible one, and falsified enrollment material can violate the offer terms.
Verification succeeds but checkout fails. Review the Google Payments profile and payment method shown at checkout. Do not use someone else’s billing identity or follow instructions that require a false address or account region.
The page shows AI Plus instead of Pro. That is the normal 2026 offer for many eligible students outside the U.S. If your institution is outside the United States, use the terms the portal shows rather than trying to force the U.S. plan.
Old student articles can produce the wrong answer
Google says it offered a different AI Pro student trial in 2025 and early 2026. That older program is why many pages mention 2 TB, 15 months, country lists that no longer match, or redemption deadlines that have already passed.
Students currently finishing the older trial may see a limited-time discount on regular Google AI plans. That possibility does not guarantee another free year. Switching from an existing trial or paid plan can also change the effective date, and upgrading away from the 12-month trial may make it impossible to return to that trial later.
Use three account-specific facts to settle any conflict: the exact plan name, the exact trial end date, and the exact next charge shown in Google One. Those details outrank an old confirmation email or a third-party guide.
Plan for the storage change, not only the charge
The 5 TB allowance can quietly become the most important part of the offer. If your combined Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos usage grows beyond the storage available after cancellation or downgrade, you may lose the ability to add new files or messages until usage is reduced or storage is purchased.
Before the free year ends, review storage and decide what should remain online. Export class archives you no longer need in active Drive folders, remove duplicate media, and make a separate backup of work that matters. Cancelling the subscription prevents the next plan charge; it does not automatically shrink your data to fit a lower storage limit.
The offer is valuable when its terms match your situation: a verified U.S. college student, a personal account, and a willingness to manage renewal. Treat it as a time-limited subscription—not a permanent student entitlement—and the free year becomes straightforward to use without an unexpected bill.
