Claude Design Pricing: Now on the Free Plan, With Shared Limits

Free gets you in. Paid plans add more allowance and usage credits at API rates. Move design systems before claude.ai/design closes on December 14, 2026.

Claude Design isn't sold separately, and since October 8, 2026 you don't need a paid plan to use it. That day Anthropic took Design, Docs and Slides out of beta and put them on every Claude plan, Free included (Anthropic, October 8, 2026). What it costs you comes down to your plan's usage limits. Design work draws from the same allowance as your chats and Claude Code, and when that allowance runs out, paid plans can keep going on usage credits billed at standard API rates.

Prices and allowances come from Anthropic's pricing page as of October 9, 2026. Anthropic doesn't publish allowances in tokens or designs, only these multiples. Prices bought through the iOS or Android app can differ, and tax is extra.

One date matters even if you never pay: the standalone site at claude.ai/design closes on December 14, 2026. Design itself keeps working inside Claude, but design systems need to be migrated and some standalone data won't carry over. The steps are in the last section.

Is Claude Design a different subscription? No, it's part of your Claude plan

There's nothing called a Claude Design subscription. Anthropic's launch post put it plainly in April: "Access is included with your plan and uses your subscription limits, with the option to continue beyond those limits by enabling extra usage" (Anthropic, April 17, 2026). The pricing page today lists "Claude Design, Slides, Docs" as a feature of the Free plan and marks Design as included on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, with no separate price anywhere.

So "Is Claude Design an extra cost?" has two answers. Getting access costs nothing beyond the plan you're on. Heavy use can cost extra, but only through the same overage system the rest of Claude uses.

If you read that Claude Design needs a $20 Pro plan, that was true from its April 17 launch until October 8. Design started as an Anthropic Labs research preview for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise only. Sites selling Claude Design "kits" or archives for $10 to $19.90, such as claudedesigner.com, are third-party products and have nothing to do with Anthropic's pricing.

How to try Claude Design for free: use the Free plan

The way to try Claude Design for free is a Free Claude account. Since October 8, the Help Center lists Design as "available on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, and it's on by default" (Get started with Claude Design). Open any chat and ask for a design, or pick Output > Design in the message box.

Free has real limits that matter for design work:

  • Smaller allowance. Free has a 5-hour session limit that Anthropic says "covers everyday questions." How many designs that covers isn't stated in Anthropic's documentation, and no figure has appeared in posts from Anthropic or its staff on X as of October 9, 2026. A long design session with screenshots and several revisions can use it up. Until October 15, 2026, a temporary promotion makes design chats count at half rate against this limit, Free included (details below).
  • No Opus or Fable models. Free includes Sonnet and Haiku only. Anthropic doesn't state which model Design uses by default on Free.
  • No usage credits. When the session limit runs out, you wait for the reset or upgrade. You can't pay to finish the job.
  • No Claude Code. The /design and /design-sync commands live in Claude Code, which starts at Pro.

There's no standing free trial of the paid plans. Anthropic's Pro help article says it doesn't offer "standard discounted pricing for any of our paid plans" and only runs occasional promotions (What is the Pro plan?). To check whether your own account has an offer, see Does Claude Pro Have a Free Trial?.

How Claude Design usage is counted: one shared allowance

Claude Design has no meter of its own in Anthropic's current documentation. The pricing FAQ says activity across Claude on web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code "all draws from the same pool," and the Help Center says "Everything you do with Claude counts toward your plan's usage limits" (How usage works). The limits that apply to design work are the same ones that apply to everything else:

  1. A session limit that resets every five hours (every plan).
  2. A weekly limit with a fixed reset time (paid plans).
  3. On Max, a separate weekly Fable limit: Fable can use up to 50% of your weekly allowance.

How fast Design uses that allowance depends on the length of the conversation, what you attach, the model and how many rounds of changes you ask for. Anthropic says there's "no fixed message count." Your live numbers are in Settings > Usage. While the merged chat-and-Cowork experience rolls out, Anthropic notes that usage "may be measured slightly differently" between accounts that have it and accounts that don't.

Until October 15, 2026: design chats count at half rate on the 5-hour limit

Anthropic's Help Center describes a temporary offer running from October 1 to October 15, 2026 (11:59 PM PT), called the artifact usage promotion (Artifact usage promotion). After Claude creates or edits a design, doc or deck in a chat, the next 10 messages in that chat count at 50% against your five-hour session limit. Only the first 15 steps of each reply get the discount. If you start the chat by choosing Output > Design, the discount applies from your first message. Editing or creating another artifact restarts the count.

  • Plans: Pro, Max and Team since October 1; Free since October 7, 2026. Enterprise isn't included.
  • Weekly limit: unchanged. Anthropic's October 1 post on X said the work "uses 50% less of your usage limits," but the terms limit the discount to the five-hour session limit.
  • Not covered: the standalone claude.ai/design app (including projects published from it), Claude Code, and anything billed to usage credits.
  • Cowork in the cloud: a task started from Output > Design is discounted for about its first 45 minutes; in other cloud tasks, up to 80 steps after an artifact is created or edited.

If you're testing Design on Free, starting from Output > Design in a new chat before October 15 stretches the session allowance furthest. Anthropic says it may change or end the promotion early.

Why older reports describe a separate Claude Design limit

Early reports describe a different setup, and they explain the "Design burned my week" posts you may have seen:

  • PCWorld, April 17, 2026: a Pro subscriber used about 80% of a separate weekly "Claude Design allowance" in roughly 25 minutes and ran out about five minutes later (PCWorld).
  • UX Pilot, May 4, 2026: the reviewer ran out of Pro's weekly Design credits after 36 minutes and five prompts (UX Pilot).
  • Zeniteq, May 19, 2026: reported that Anthropic doubled the weekly Claude Design allowances on every paid plan (Zeniteq).
  • Blago Dimitrov, May 28, 2026: users saw an in-app notice that "Claude Design now shares usage limits with Claude.ai and Claude Code," and one prompt was reported at 59% of a Pro session (blagodesign.com).

Read together, these suggest Design moved from its own weekly meter to the shared pool in late May, which matches today's documentation. That sequence is an inference from reports, not something Anthropic has spelled out. Those burn rates also come from the Opus 4.7 period. Treat them as a warning that design sessions are heavy, not as today's rate.

What changed since: September 22 limit increase and recent user reports

  • First-party, September 22, 2026: Anthropic said on X that it was increasing five-hour usage limits on Pro, Max and Team, and giving subscribers a rate-limit reset they can save and use when they choose (@claudeai). The post didn't say by how much. Every burn report in the list above predates this change.
  • User report, September 27, 2026: a Pro subscriber said they built two progressive web apps in a week using chat, Design and Claude Code and were at about 30% of their weekly limit (@din8sh on X). The post quoted another user saying limits had gone "from barely usable to basically unlimited."
  • User report, October 9, 2026: a Max 20x subscriber recalled hitting their limit "almost immediately" right after the April launch (post on X), which matches the launch-era reports above.

These are single accounts without measurements. They suggest current Pro limits are workable for mixed use, but your own Settings > Usage page is the only reliable gauge.

What Claude Design costs after your limit: usage credits at API rates

When a paid plan's allowance runs out, you have four choices: wait for the reset, turn on usage credits, buy a discounted bundle of credits, or move to a bigger plan. Usage credits used to be called "extra usage," and Anthropic's April launch post and some help links still use that name.

Usage credits are pay-as-you-go: once a session, weekly or Fable limit is used up, your requests keep working and are billed at standard API rates, separately from your subscription (Manage usage credits). You turn them on in Settings > Usage, prepay funds, and can set a monthly spend cap or auto-reload. A notice saying "Now using credits" tells you the switch has happened. If you subscribed through the mobile app, you have to turn credits on from the web. Free accounts can't buy them.

Usage bundles are prepaid credits at a discount, available on Pro, Max and Team (Buy usage bundles):

Bundle valueYou payDiscount
$50$4510%
$250$20020%
$1,000$70030%

Pro and Max subscribers can buy up to $2,000 of bundle value a month; Team owners up to $3,000. The balance works across Claude, Claude Code and Cowork. The bundle article doesn't name Design, but Design now runs inside Claude, so the same balance should cover it.

The API rates credits are billed at, per million tokens, input/output (API pricing):

ModelInputOutputNotes for Design users
Sonnet 5.5$2$10Available on every plan
Opus 5.5$4$20Pro and above
Fable 5.1$10$50On Pro, always billed to usage credits, from the first token

The full model list is in Claude API Pricing Per Million Tokens. Note the Fable rule: on Pro and Team Standard seats, choosing Fable in Design charges credits even if your allowance isn't used up (Fable on your plan). The rules by plan are covered in Claude Fable 5.1 Usage Limits.

What one heavy design session could cost on credits

Anthropic doesn't publish how many tokens a design uses, so this is an assumed session, not a measurement. The example treats design work as input-heavy, since each round of changes works from the whole conversation, your attachments and the current design. Assume 15 rounds, each sending about 100,000 tokens and getting about 10,000 back. That's 1.5 million input tokens and 150,000 output tokens.

Cost = (input tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × input rate) + (output tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × output rate)

ModelCalculationCost on creditsWith a $1,000 bundle (30% off)
Sonnet 5.51.5 × $2 + 0.15 × $10$4.50$3.15
Opus 5.51.5 × $4 + 0.15 × $20$9.00$6.30
Fable 5.11.5 × $10 + 0.15 × $50$22.50$15.75

Two things move the real figure. If repeated context is billed at cache rates, input gets much cheaper (an Opus 5.5 cache read is $0.20 per million tokens), and Anthropic doesn't say how much of a Design session is cached. Large screenshots, big design systems and many small "try again" rounds push it up. Use your own Settings > Usage history to replace the assumptions with your numbers.

Which Claude plan fits your design work: Free, Pro, credits or Max

Start from how often you run out, not from the sticker price:

  • Stay on Free if you're trying Design or make an occasional one-pager or mockup, and waiting for the 5-hour reset is fine. You give up Opus, Claude Code's /design command and any way to pay past the limit.
  • Move to Pro ($20) if Free runs out in a normal session, you want Opus, or you need to hand designs to Claude Code. Pro is also the cheapest plan that can buy usage credits, which matters when a deadline won't wait for a reset.
  • Use Pro plus usage credits if you run out a few times a month. Set a monthly spend cap in Settings > Usage so a long session can't surprise you. If you're buying credits every month anyway, a bundle cuts the rate by 10% to 30%.
  • Try Max 5x ($100) or Max 20x ($200) if you hit Pro's weekly limit most weeks, or you want Fable inside your allowance instead of on credits. Max 5x costs $80 a month more than Pro. If your credit bill on Pro keeps landing near that, a month on Max 5x is worth testing. What it buys is five times Pro's per-session allowance, not a fixed dollar amount of tokens, so compare the two by watching your usage meter, not by the price alone.
Four plan cards rising like stairs from left to right, ordered by how often your allowance runs out: Free at $0 for trying it out, Pro at $20 when Free runs out, Pro plus usage credits a few times a month, and Max 5x or 20x at $100 or $200 for most weeks

Design shares its allowance with chat and Claude Code, so count all three. A plan that's comfortable for design alone can feel tight if you also code in Claude Code every day. The trade-offs between Pro and Max for coding are in Claude Code Pricing: Pro vs Max.

One trap: Max's monthly API credits are not usage credits. They don't pay for overage in Claude, Claude Code or Cowork, so they won't cover Design either. What they're for is explained in Claude Max API Credits.

Claude Design for teams: Team seats vs Enterprise billing

On Team (2 to 150 seats), each seat comes with an allowance. Standard seats get more than Pro and Premium seats get five times Standard, so only overflow costs extra, and owners can buy up to $3,000 of discounted bundles a month. Design is on by default on Team.

On Enterprise, the $20 seat fee "doesn't include any usage" and every token is billed at standard API rates (Enterprise billing). In the example above, the $9.00 Opus session isn't an overage. It's what every session of that size costs. Admins can set spend limits per user and for the organization, and organizations with US-only inference turned on pay 1.1x those rates. Design turns on by default for Enterprise on October 15, 2026, and owners can turn it on earlier in Organization settings > Artifacts. Design systems stay off by default on Enterprise.

Anthropic's admin guide recommends setting up the design system with a few designers before giving everyone access, because designs made without one come out "functional but generic." That order also keeps early usage from going into work nobody can use.

Is Claude Design still available? Yes, but claude.ai/design closes December 14

Claude Design is still available, and on more plans than before. What's ending is the separate website. Anthropic is folding the standalone claude.ai/design into Claude. It stays open until December 14, 2026, and after that the address takes you to Claude (Migrate from standalone Claude Design).

An Anthropic staff post explains why. On October 8, 2026, Nate Parrott, a designer at Anthropic, wrote on X that people "really like the versions of Claude Design and Slides built into Claude — usage is much higher," and that Anthropic is folding standalone Design into Claude on December 14 (post). "Usage" there means how much people use the built-in version, not a bigger allowance. He also asked users to tell him where the new version falls short before the closure.

Design already works in more places than the old site:

  • In any Claude conversation, where it can use your files, context and connectors.
  • In the Artifacts tab, from a Design template.
  • In Claude Code, with /design and /design-sync, on desktop or in the terminal (Pro and above). In an October 9, 2026 reply on X, Parrott said the terminal /design and /slides commands are "still feature-flagged for now," so they may not show up in every install yet (reply).
  • In the iOS and Android apps, where you can ask for and edit designs. Sharing settings change on web or desktop.

Exports cover HTML bundles, PowerPoint, PDF, Google Slides and handoff to Claude Code.

You may also see a claim that Cowork and Claude Design merged into regular Claude chats on October 6, 2026. Anthropic's announcements give two other dates. On September 16, Design started working inside conversations, and Cowork began merging into chat, rolling out to Pro and Max accounts first (Anthropic, September 16, 2026). On October 8, Design came out of beta on every plan. No post from Anthropic on X gives October 6 either. The merged chat experience is still reaching accounts in stages, so yours may not show it yet.

Timeline of Claude Design access in 2026: April 17 preview launch for Pro and up, late May shared limits per user reports, September 16 inside any chat, October 8 every plan including Free, October 15 Enterprise on by default, and December 14 when claude.ai/design closes

What to do before the standalone site closes

Item in standalone DesignWhat happensWhat to do
Design systemsCan be migrated now; originals stay unchanged until closureOn the Artifacts page in Claude, click "Migrate team design systems." One migration covers the whole organization
ProjectsKeep working in standalone until it closes; Anthropic says details on moving them are "coming soon"Nothing yet. Download any you can't risk losing
Chats with Claude and commentsNot carried over; deleted after closureCopy out anything you need
Public links to projectsStop working after closureReplace links you've shared

Empty design systems and ones made from a built-in starter theme aren't migrated. To save a project yourself, open it in the standalone site, choose Share > Project HTML and export the project archive. Anthropic says this export is free and doesn't count toward your usage limits.

Team and Enterprise owners have one more check. Migration needs Artifacts and Design systems turned on in Organization settings > Artifacts, and Design systems are off by default on Enterprise. The Team and Enterprise admin guide doesn't yet give a closing date for those plans, and no separate date has appeared in posts from Anthropic or its staff on X as of October 9, 2026. December 14 is the only published date, so plan around it and watch the admin guide for any change.

More questions about Claude Design costs

Does Claude Design cost extra on top of Claude Pro?

No. Design is part of Pro and uses Pro's usage limits. You only pay more if you turn on usage credits and go past those limits, or if you pick Fable, which Pro always bills to credits.

Do Max monthly API credits pay for Claude Design?

No. They're separate from usage credits and don't apply to overage in Claude, Claude Code or Cowork. Design overage on Max runs on usage credits at API rates.

Does exporting or migrating my designs use up my allowance?

Exporting a project archive from the standalone site is free and doesn't count toward usage limits, according to Anthropic's migration guide. Anthropic doesn't say whether the design-system migration uses allowance.

Is Claude Cowork priced the same way?

Yes. Cowork also has no separate fee and draws from the same allowance. The plan-by-plan details are in Claude Cowork Pricing: What You Actually Pay on Each Plan.
