Claude Pro does not have a standing public free trial that every user can activate. Anthropic's current Pro plan help page describes Pro as a paid plan, says there is no standing discount available on request, and notes that the company may occasionally run limited-time promotions.
That distinction matters. A real promotion may appear for a particular account, but a seven-day link mentioned in a forum, an old 30-day campaign, Claude Free, and API credits are not interchangeable. The dependable test is whether the official Claude upgrade flow shows an offer to your account and discloses its price after the promotional period.
The two-minute offer check
Use a supported location and an account you control, then follow Anthropic's normal Pro signup path:
- Sign in at
claude.ai. - Open Settings → Billing → Upgrade plan.
- Select Get Pro plan, but do not confirm the subscription yet.
- Read the checkout summary. Look for an explicit promotional price, its duration, the first paid renewal date, the renewal amount, and the billing interval.
- If the summary only shows the regular subscription price, treat that as no trial for this account.
Do not infer eligibility from a button that merely says “Try Claude.” On Anthropic's pricing page, the same wording is used to start using Claude, including the permanent $0 Free plan. A genuine subscription promotion needs concrete billing terms before confirmation.

The screenshot or receipt worth keeping is the final order summary—not a third-party invitation page. It should let you answer four questions without guessing: what you pay today, when the next charge happens, how much it will be, and whether the plan is monthly or annual.
What is actually available without paying
Claude Free is the official no-cost option. It is a separate plan, not a temporary Pro subscription. Anthropic says Free usage is session-based, resets every five hours, and varies with demand and how you use the product. There is no reliable universal message count.
For someone evaluating response quality, writing style, file handling, or whether Claude fits a normal workflow, Free is the sensible starting point. It cannot answer every Pro question because Pro includes more usage, access to more capabilities, Claude Code, and other paid features. Still, it can tell you whether the core interaction is useful before you enter payment details.
Pro currently costs $20 per month in the US, or $200 billed up front for an annual subscription. Anthropic says Pro offers at least five times the usage per session compared with Free, while also applying weekly and potentially other limits. “Paid” does not mean unlimited.
Why a promotion may not appear
Official promotions can be account-specific. Anthropic's promotion eligibility help says they are generally intended for people trying a paid plan for the first time. An account may be ineligible if it has a current subscription or subscribed in the past. App Store subscribers also cannot use promotions at this time.
This explains why two people in the same country can see different upgrade offers. It also explains why repeatedly trying referral links is a poor verification strategy: the account's eligibility state still controls the outcome.
Location is another hard gate. Claude requires users to be physically present in a supported location, and account creation requires a supported phone number. The United States is currently listed. If a location is not listed, a promotional link does not override that requirement.
Trial, discount, Free, and API credit are different
| What you see | What it means | Does it activate Pro? | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Free | Ongoing $0 individual plan with lower limits | No | Current Free limits in the app |
| Official account promotion | Temporary price or no-charge period shown by Claude | Yes, if accepted and eligible | Duration, first charge, renewal price |
| Discounted first months | Paid Pro at a reduced introductory price | Yes | Total promotional cost and later price |
| Claude Console/API credit | Balance for metered developer API calls | No | API rate and credit expiration |
| School or employer access | Access governed by an organization | Not necessarily an individual Pro subscription | Owner, duration, and post-access account state |
| Third-party shared account or “activation” | Access controlled by someone else | Not a safe official subscription path | Avoid account and payment risk |
The API boundary is especially easy to miss. Anthropic explicitly says a Pro subscription does not include Claude Console API usage. Likewise, an API credit cannot unlock the consumer Pro plan. If your real goal is terminal-based coding rather than the broader Pro subscription, use our Claude Code pricing and lower-cost options guide as a separate decision.
Read the renewal before accepting an offer

Claude Pro subscriptions renew automatically by default. Before confirming a promotion, record:
- the amount charged today, including whether it is genuinely $0;
- the exact date of the first regular charge;
- the regular renewal price and whether tax is added;
- monthly versus annual billing;
- the billing channel: Claude web/desktop, Apple App Store, or Google Play.
Anthropic says cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. Its cancellation guide recommends canceling at least 24 hours before the renewal date to avoid the next charge. Web and desktop subscriptions are canceled under Settings → Billing; mobile-store subscriptions are managed through the store that billed them.
If you intend to evaluate Pro only during a promotional window, set a calendar reminder several days before renewal. Canceling early normally preserves access through the end of the current period, so there is little benefit in waiting until the last hour.
Payments are generally non-refundable except where Anthropic's terms or local law provide otherwise. That is another reason to treat the checkout summary—not a social post—as the contract.
A practical decision when no offer appears
If your official upgrade screen shows no promotion, you have two straightforward choices.
Stay on Claude Free if you are still testing the core assistant or only use it occasionally. Its limits are lower, but it avoids a billing commitment and remains the official way to use Claude without a subscription.
Subscribe for one paid month if a specific Pro-only capability or higher usage is worth $20 to you. Treat it as a normal purchase, cancel at least 24 hours before renewal if you do not want a second month, and judge it against a real task rather than trying to maximize message volume.
Waiting for a public code is not a third strategy with a predictable outcome. Anthropic may run future promotions, but its own support page says there is no standing discount available on request. When a legitimate offer exists, the terms should be visible through an official Claude channel and survive the final account eligibility check.
Before you click Subscribe
You can safely proceed when all of these are true:
- Claude officially supports your physical location and phone number.
- The offer appears inside Claude's own upgrade or checkout flow.
- The page names the promotional price and duration.
- You can see the first paid renewal date and regular price.
- You know which platform will manage cancellation.
- You understand that Pro usage is higher, not unlimited, and API usage is separate.
If any of those facts is missing, pause before entering payment information. A legitimate Claude Pro promotion should make the financial commitment clearer—not require you to trust a copied code, a shared account, or a claim that cannot be verified on your own account.
