# Claude Image Generation Connector: Which to Add, What It Costs

> Claude makes no pictures itself; a connector does. Hugging Face is in Anthropic's directory, Higgsfield and AI Box are custom URLs, and Free gets one slot.

Claude has no built-in image generator. To get a real picture out of a Claude chat, you connect an outside image service through a connector. Claude writes the prompt, the service renders the image, and the result comes back into the conversation.

As of October 2, 2026, there are three kinds of connector to choose from:

- **Hugging Face**, which Anthropic lists in its Connectors Directory. You need a free Hugging Face account, which comes with free credits of an unpublished size.
- **A vendor's custom connector**, such as Higgsfield or AI Box. You paste the vendor's URL into Claude and pay the vendor through credits or a subscription.
- **A bring-your-own-key connector**, where you supply your own Gemini or OpenAI API key and pay the model provider per image.

Custom connectors work on every Claude plan, including Free. The Free plan is limited to one custom connector, so on Free the choice matters more.

## Does Claude have an image generation tool? No, a connector does the rendering

Claude does not generate images on its own. Anthropic's help page says it plainly: "[Claude doesn't generate photos or illustrations the way image-generation tools do](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/9002504-can-claude-produce-images)." What Claude can do by itself is build diagrams, charts, and interactive visuals out of HTML and SVG, and look at images you upload.

![Diagram: your request goes to Claude, which without a connector draws HTML and SVG visuals, and with an image connector sends the prompt to a connected service that renders the picture](https://www.aifreeapi.com/posts/en/claude-image-generation-connector/img/who-makes-the-picture.webp)

That is the gap a connector fills. A connector links Claude to a remote MCP server, which is a web service that offers Claude extra tools. When that service is an image generator, Claude can call its "generate image" tool in the middle of a chat.

So when a vendor page says Claude "can now generate images," read it as shorthand. The vendor's model makes the picture, on the vendor's servers, under the vendor's pricing. Claude's part is to turn your request into a prompt, send it, and show you what comes back. Hugging Face's guide adds that Claude can [see the generated image](https://huggingface.co/blog/claude-and-mcp) and help you revise it.

## Image generation connectors for Claude compared: who runs each, what it costs

The differences you can check before connecting are who operates the service, whether Anthropic lists it, what account it wants, and how it charges. Model names, prices, and "free" claims below are each vendor's own statements as of October 2, 2026.

| Connector | Listed in Anthropic's directory | Account you need | Cost, per the vendor | Models, per the vendor |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Hugging Face](https://claude.com/connectors/hugging-face) | Yes, marked "Anthropic verified," added November 2025 | Hugging Face account (free to create) | Free credits through ZeroGPU Spaces; a paid PRO account raises limits. No figure is published. | Whichever image Spaces you enable, such as FLUX.1 Krea or Qwen-Image |
| [Higgsfield](https://higgsfield.ai/claude-ai-image-generator) | Added by custom URL; no directory listing confirmed | Higgsfield account | "Free renders to start," then credits priced by model and resolution. Amounts aren't on the page. | "15+" models, including Nano Banana Pro, Seedream, FLUX, and GPT Image |
| [AI Box](https://www.aibox.ai/claude-image-generation) | Added by custom URL; no directory listing confirmed | AI Box account | "Plans start at $8.99/month" | GPT Image, Flux, Ideogram, Stable Diffusion, Seedream, Gemini Image |
| Bring-your-own-key connector, such as [this one from a Substack author](https://aiblewmymind.substack.com/p/claude-image-generation) | No; added by custom URL | A Gemini or OpenAI API key | You pay the model provider per image at its API rates | The provider behind your key |

OpenArt, Photoroom, SeaArt, and Deep Art Effects also publish Claude connectors of their own. Their terms follow the same pattern as the vendor rows above: an account with the vendor and the vendor's pricing.

### Which Claude connector is best for image generation depends on four things

No connector in the table is the best one for everybody. Four conditions decide which one fits you.

- **You want a connector Anthropic has listed and no bill to start.** Choose Hugging Face. Of the directory entries covered here, it is the one whose tool list includes image-generation tools. The catch is that the free allowance has no published size, so you find the limit by reaching it.
- **You want a specific commercial model.** If you came for Nano Banana Pro or GPT Image, look at a vendor connector that names it, or a bring-your-own-key connector for that provider. If you haven't settled on a model yet, [Nano Banana Pro vs GPT Image 2: which to use and what it costs](/en/posts/nano-banana-pro-vs-gpt-image-2) covers that choice.
- **You want a predictable monthly charge.** AI Box is the only vendor in the table with a published starting price. Higgsfield's page doesn't state its credit prices.
- **You already pay for an API key.** A bring-your-own-key connector adds no second subscription. You do hand your key to whoever runs that connector, which makes the safety checks below more important.

Picture quality comes from the model behind the connector, not from Claude and not from the connector itself. Two connectors that expose the same model should differ mainly in price and account terms.

## Canva, Adobe, Unsplash, and Gemini listings don't generate images

Several entries in Anthropic's directory look like text-to-image generators and do something else.

| Directory entry | What it does | Why it isn't a text-to-image generator |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Canva](https://claude.com/connectors/canva) | Searches, creates, autofills, and exports Canva designs | It builds layouts inside Canva, such as posters and slides, not free-form pictures |
| [Adobe](https://claude.com/connectors/adobe-creativity) | Edits photos, customizes templates, handles PDFs, resizes video | The listing describes editing and design work. It doesn't say Firefly generation is included. |
| [Unsplash](https://claude.com/connectors/unsplash) | Searches free stock photos and illustrations | It finds existing images and creates none |
| [Gemini](https://claude.com/connectors/gemini-mcp) | Reads crypto market data and your exchange account | It is made by Gemini Space Station, LLC, a crypto exchange, and has nothing to do with Google's Gemini image models |

These connectors are still useful next to an image generator. Canva can place a generated picture into a layout, and Adobe can remove a background or crop it. They don't replace the generator.

To use Google's Gemini image models from Claude, you need either a vendor connector that offers them (AI Box lists Gemini Image) or a bring-your-own-key connector with a Gemini API key.

## What your Claude plan allows: Free gets one custom connector

Every plan can add custom connectors. Anthropic's help page says they are "[available on Claude, Cowork, and Claude Desktop for users on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11175166-getting-started-with-custom-connectors-using-remote-mcp)," and that "Free users are limited to one custom connector."

| Plan | Who can add a custom connector | Limit that affects you |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Free | You | One custom connector at a time |
| Pro, Max | You | No one-connector cap is stated |
| Team | Owners and Primary Owners only | Members connect after an owner adds it |
| Enterprise | Owners, Primary Owners, or a custom role with that permission | Members connect after it is added |

On Free, the single slot means you can't keep Higgsfield and AI Box connected side by side. To try a second one, remove the first. If one slot is the only thing pushing you toward a paid plan, check [whether Claude Pro has a free trial](/en/posts/claude-pro-free-trial) before you pay. For what each paid tier includes, see [what Claude Cowork costs on each plan](/en/posts/claude-cowork-pricing).

On Team and Enterprise, you can't paste a URL yourself unless you are an owner. Ask an owner to add the connector under Organization settings > Connectors. It then shows up in your own connector list with a "Connect" button.

One Hugging Face detail matters for Free users. The directory's "Add to Claude" button is the simplest way in. Hugging Face's own guide, in a note dated October 2025, says image generation needs the "Add custom connector" option with the URL `https://huggingface.co/mcp?login`. If the directory version gives you search tools and no image tools, add it by URL instead, and expect it to occupy your one custom slot.

## Add a custom connector and generate your first image

The steps below are Anthropic's instructions for Pro and Max. Its help page gives no separate steps for Free. Some vendor pages describe the path as Settings > Connectors, so look for the Connectors menu if your app is laid out differently.

1. Create your account with the image service first. Without one, the sign-in step fails.
2. In Claude, open **Customize > Connectors**.
3. Click **+ Add**, then **Add custom connector**.
4. Type a name you'll recognize, such as "Higgsfield."
5. Paste the remote MCP server URL from the vendor's own page, then click **Continue**.
6. Review the authentication settings Claude detected. Most vendor connectors ask you to sign in to the vendor account. A bring-your-own-key connector asks for the key here.
7. Click **Add**, then complete the vendor's sign-in window and read what it asks permission to do.

![Four steps to add an image connector in Claude: create the vendor account, open Connectors in the Customize menu, paste the vendor URL, and switch the connector on in the conversation](https://www.aifreeapi.com/posts/en/claude-image-generation-connector/img/add-custom-connector-steps.webp)

These are the URLs each vendor publishes:

```text
Hugging Face   https://huggingface.co/mcp?login
Higgsfield     https://mcp.higgsfield.ai/mcp
AI Box         https://mcp.aibox.ai/mcp/
```

For Hugging Face, do one more thing before you chat. Open [huggingface.co/settings/mcp](https://huggingface.co/settings/mcp) and choose which Spaces Claude may use. Those Spaces are the image models you'll get.

Then generate the first image:

1. Start a new conversation and click the **+** button at the lower left of the chat box.
2. Open **Connectors** and switch your image connector on. Connectors are enabled per conversation.
3. Ask for the image and name the connector, for example: "Use Higgsfield to generate a 16:9 photo of a lighthouse at dusk."
4. Approve the tool call when Claude asks.

You have succeeded when an image, or a link to one, appears in the reply. If Claude draws an SVG instead, or says it can't create images, the connector is switched off for that conversation or the sign-in didn't finish. If the vendor reports that you are out of credits, the limit sits on the vendor's side. Upgrading Claude won't lift it.

To change a connector's URL or settings later, remove it and add it again. Custom connectors can't be edited in place.

## Is a custom connector safe? Six checks before you grant access

A custom connector is only as trustworthy as the company running the server. Anthropic says custom connectors "connect Claude to arbitrary services that have not been verified by Anthropic." Even on directory pages it adds that it "does not control which tools developers make available." A directory listing tells you who made the connector. It doesn't promise how the connector behaves.

Run through these checks before you click Add:

1. **Take the URL from the vendor's own website.** Don't copy it from a forum post or a video description. The domain in the URL should match the company you think you're connecting to.
2. **Read the permission screen.** An image generator needs to create images in your vendor account. Deny access if it asks for more than that.
3. **Know what you'll be charged.** If the vendor wants a card on file, find the price per image or per month first. A "free" label on a vendor page means starter credits, and neither Hugging Face nor Higgsfield states the amount.
4. **Limit any API key you hand over.** With a bring-your-own-key connector, use a key created for this purpose and set a spending cap with the provider, because the connector's operator can make calls with it.
5. **Keep approving tool calls one at a time.** Anthropic advises clicking "Allow always" only for a server and tool you trust to run unsupervised. A server's tools can change after you connect.
6. **Remember where your prompts go.** The connection runs from Anthropic's cloud to the vendor's server, on every Claude client. Your image prompts, and any picture you ask the service to edit, reach that vendor.

If something looks wrong later, remove the connector under Customize > Connectors and revoke Claude's access in the vendor account's security settings.

## More questions about Claude image connectors

### Is there a free Claude image generation connector?

Partly. Adding a connector costs nothing on any Claude plan, and the Free plan allows one custom connector. The images are what cost money. Hugging Face gives free credits with a free account, and Higgsfield advertises free renders to start. Neither publishes how many images that covers. Plan on a limited free allowance rather than an ongoing free supply.

### Can Claude generate images like ChatGPT?

Not on its own. ChatGPT has an image model built in. Claude needs a connector, and the picture comes from the connected service. Once one is set up the experience is similar: you describe the image in chat and ask for changes in follow-up messages.

### Do image generation connectors work in Claude Code?

Claude Code has its own setup. You add an MCP server or a plugin there instead of using the Customize menu. One example is the `hex/claude-image-generation` plugin on GitHub, which calls image APIs with your own keys. The menu steps above apply to the Claude apps and Cowork.

### Do custom connectors work in the Claude mobile app?

Anthropic says a custom connector is tied to your account and connects from its cloud on every client, mobile apps included. How generated images are displayed in the mobile app isn't documented, so do the first setup on the web or desktop app.
