Yes, startups can get free Claude credits. Anthropic's Claude Startups program (its page is titled "Claude for Startups") gives approved companies a free year of Claude Team for up to five Premium seats, a one-time $1,000 in Claude API credits, and discounts from partner tools. You can apply if your company was founded in the last five years or raised funding in the last two, you have a Claude Console account, and you use an email on your company's own domain. The company also can't be based in, owned from, or serving an excluded region such as China or Russia. Anthropic [expanded the program on October 6, 2026](https://claude.com/blog/were-expanding-the-claude-startups-program-to-help-founders-build); everything below is as of October 8, 2026.

None of it is cash. The free Team year is a 100% discount on a subscription, and only if your organization is new to Claude Team. The $1,000 is a prepaid API balance that expires six months after it's granted and only works on the Claude API through Claude Console. The big numbers in the headlines are ceilings:

- **"Up to $7,000"** is five Premium seats at $100 per seat per month billed annually ($6,000) plus the $1,000 credit.
- **"Up to $45K"** is the combined list price of every partner offer. Anthropic says you may not be able to receive or combine all of them.
- **"Up to $100K"** in extra API credits exists only for founders whose investor is in Anthropic's VC partner network, and it's claimed through that VC.

At 3,000 input and 800 output tokens per request, $1,000 covers about 71,000 Sonnet 5.5 calls or 36,000 Opus 5.5 calls. The catches sit in the claim flow. The Team checkout can open with the wrong seat mix, it asks for a card even at $0, and it renews at full price after 12 months.

## Who qualifies: company age, a company email, and a supported region

The [official FAQ](https://claude.com/programs/startups) sets the first three conditions, and the program terms add the fourth.

| Condition | What counts | What fails |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Company age or funding | Founded in the last 5 years, or funded in the last 2. Bootstrapped and pre-seed companies are eligible; VC money isn't required. | Older companies with no funding round in the last 2 years |
| Claude Console account | An account on the developer Console at [platform.claude.com](https://platform.claude.com), which is separate from the claude.ai chat app | Applying from a claude.ai login only |
| Company email | An address on the same domain as your company website | Gmail, Outlook, or any address that doesn't match the site |
| Region and ownership | A company established and operating in a [supported country](https://www.anthropic.com/supported-countries), owned from one, and not serving people in excluded regions | See the list below |

The [Startup Program Official Terms](https://www.anthropic.com/startup-program-official-terms) exclude companies established or operating in, or planning to make Anthropic's services available to people located in, Belarus, China, Cuba, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Sudan, Syria, Crimea, and the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics. Companies barred by US or other export rules are out, as are Anthropic employees and their families. Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Russia are also missing from Anthropic's supported-countries list.

Registering a company somewhere else doesn't change the answer. Since a [September 4, 2025 policy update](https://www.anthropic.com/news/updating-restrictions-of-sales-to-unsupported-regions), Anthropic prohibits organizations more than 50% owned, directly or indirectly, by companies headquartered in unsupported regions, regardless of where they operate. So the program is not open worldwide.

Meeting the conditions makes you eligible to apply, not approved. The terms say Anthropic weighs business traction, investment and funding, and Claude integration and usage, and decides at its sole discretion. Per the FAQ, most applications are decided within minutes. The rest go to manual review, which usually takes 2–3 business days. Companies that joined before the October expansion don't need to reapply.

## What Claude for Startups members get, and what each part is worth

| Benefit | What actually arrives | Conditions and limits |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Claude Team, 12 months | Up to five Premium seats at $0 | Only organizations new to Team. Card required at checkout. Renews at the normal price afterward. |
| Claude API credit | $1,000 prepaid balance, one time | Expires 6 months after it's granted. First-party Claude API through Console only, not AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or other platforms. |
| Higher API rate limits | Applied automatically to members who receive credits | Anthropic doesn't publish the amounts |
| Claude Startup Stack | Partner discounts and credits, redeemed with codes in Console | Up to $45K at list prices. Offers come from the partners, not Anthropic. |
| Partner-VC credits | Up to $100K in additional API credits | Only if your VC is in Anthropic's partner network. Claimed through the VC. |
| Office hours and events | 45-minute Applied AI office hours every other week, plus Founder House, hackathons, and meetups | Event space is limited |

**The Team year.** A Premium seat is a Team seat, not a Claude Max subscription. On Anthropic's [pricing page](https://claude.com/pricing), Standard seats give more usage than Pro and Premium seats give 5x more than Standard, on rolling five-hour windows plus weekly limits. Team includes Claude Code and Claude Cowork, so a five-person team can code with Claude for a year without paying for seats. The $6,000 value assumes annual billing at $100 per seat. At the monthly price of $125 per seat, the same five seats list at $7,500 a year.

**The partner offers.** As of October 8, 2026, the program page shows offers such as ElevenLabs (12 months free plus 33M characters), ClickHouse ($5K in Cloud credits), Hex (6 months free on Enterprise), Granola (3 months of Business free for up to 10 seats), Gamma (25% off the first year of Pro annual), and Firecrawl (2.5x your plan's monthly credits for a year). The list is longer behind a "View more" button. Under the [Additional Benefits Addendum](https://www.anthropic.com/legal/startup-program-addendum), each offer can be redeemed once unless the partner says otherwise. Offers are non-transferable, have no cash value, and their codes can't be shared outside your company. Treat $45K as a menu, not a balance. Most teams will only use the few tools they already need.

**The VC route.** The $100K figure doesn't come from your own application. Anthropic's [VC partner program](https://www.anthropic.com/contact-sales/vc-partner) is something venture firms apply to, and Anthropic doesn't publish which firms are in it. If you have an investor, ask them whether they're a Claude partner.

**What Anthropic gets back.** By joining, you let Anthropic use your company name and logo to identify you publicly as a member and customer. You also agree to consider in good faith any request for an executive quote or co-marketing. If Anthropic asks for a signed affidavit and publicity release, you have 14 calendar days to return it or the benefits can be forfeited. API credits may also have tax implications, and Anthropic won't issue a 1099 for them unless the law requires it.

## How to apply and claim the credits without a surprise bill

The [application](https://platform.claude.com/offers/startups-application) runs inside Claude Console. The form details below come from a [first-hand report by Chungoose](https://www.chungoose.kr/blog/claude-free-startups-team-premium-application), a South Korean SaaS company that applied, was approved, and went as far as the payment screen on October 7, 2026. It's one company's experience, not a guarantee, but it matches the official FAQ wherever the two overlap.

![Four claim steps for Claude for Startups: apply in Console with a company-domain email, get approved, claim the $1,000 credit and Team year separately, and set 5 Premium and 0 Standard seats for a $0 checkout; a note warns that a card is required and the plan renews at full price after 12 months](https://www.aifreeapi.com/posts/en/claude-for-startups/img/claim-steps.webp)

1. **Sign in to Console with your company account.** The application shows which Console organization you're applying for. Make sure it's the one you'll build in, because the terms attach benefits to the account named in the application.
2. **Fill in the company details.** The fields reported were founder name and title, company name, website, country and city, industry, founding month and year, funding stage, investors (optional), how much of your AI spend goes to Anthropic, and your plans.
3. **Answer two short questions in English.** They were "What are you building on Claude?" and "Where do you want support from Anthropic?", each with a character limit. No pitch deck was requested. Write what you've actually built separately from what you plan to build.
4. **Wait for the decision email.** Chungoose's approval arrived with the subject "You're in. Welcome to Claude Startups." and a button that leads to the Claude Startups page in Console.
5. **Claim the API credit and the Team offer separately.** Approval doesn't apply either one automatically. Claim the $1,000 on the Claude Startups page, then start the Team offer from the same page.
6. **Fix the seat mix before you pay.** In Chungoose's case the Team checkout opened with two Standard seats. To use the full offer they changed it to 5 Premium and 0 Standard. The screen then showed a $625 subtotal, a −$625 discount, and $0 due.
7. **Read the renewal line.** A card number is required even when the total is $0. The same screen said the plan renews at the normal price after the free period. For five Premium seats billed monthly, that's $625 a month plus tax.

Set a calendar reminder for month 11. That gives you time to drop seats, switch to Standard, or cancel before the first full-price charge. Owners cancel or change a Team plan under **Organization settings > Billing** on claude.ai.

Four things stop the process. An existing Team plan on the organization disqualifies the free year. A personal email domain fails the email check. Applying from the wrong Console organization puts the credit where you won't use it. And an ignored affidavit request can cost you the benefits.

## How far $1,000 in Claude API credits goes, model by model

It depends almost entirely on the model. At Anthropic's [list prices](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/pricing) as of October 8, 2026, and an example request of 3,000 input tokens and 800 output tokens:

Cost per request = 3,000 × input price ÷ 1,000,000 + 800 × output price ÷ 1,000,000

| Model | Price per 1M tokens (input / output) | Cost per request | Requests per $1,000 | With Batch API (−50%) | Per day over 6 months |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Haiku 5.5 (prompts up to 100K) | $0.10 / $0.50 | $0.0007 | ≈1,428,600 | ≈2,857,100 | ≈7,849 |
| Sonnet 5.5 | $2 / $10 | $0.014 | ≈71,400 | ≈142,900 | ≈392 |
| Opus 5.5 | $4 / $20 | $0.028 | ≈35,700 | ≈71,400 | ≈196 |
| Fable 5.1 | $10 / $50 | $0.07 | ≈14,300 | ≈28,600 | ≈78 |

The last column spreads the standard-price requests over 182 days. Haiku 5.5 costs $0.50 / $2.50 per million tokens once a prompt passes 100K tokens. Your tokenizer counts and output lengths will move these numbers, so treat them as an example, not a quota.

The same credit measured against a steady product workload of 50M input and 10M output tokens a month:

| Model | Monthly cost at that volume | How long $1,000 lasts |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Haiku 5.5 | $10 | Expires at 6 months with about $940 unused |
| Sonnet 5.5 | $200 | 5 months |
| Opus 5.5 | $400 | 2.5 months |
| Fable 5.1 | $1,000 | 1 month |

![Bar chart of how long a $1,000 Claude API credit lasts at 50M input and 10M output tokens a month: Fable 5.1 one month, Opus 5.5 2.5 months, Sonnet 5.5 five months, and Haiku 5.5 reaching the six-month expiry with about $940 unused](https://www.aifreeapi.com/posts/en/claude-for-startups/img/credit-runway.webp)

A widely upvoted Reddit reaction to the launch called $1,000 "a few days of free Claude use." That holds only at heavy volume. To burn it in three days you would spend about $333 a day, which is roughly 11,900 Opus 5.5 requests a day at the size above. For prototyping and evals, Sonnet 5.5 at a few hundred calls a day lasts the full six months. The comment also compares two different things. The API credit has nothing to do with your claude.ai usage. App usage comes from the Team seats, and that's the larger part of the offer.

To stretch the balance, route routine work to Haiku 5.5 (see [Claude Haiku 5.5 vs GPT-6 Luna Pricing: Same Until 100K, Then 5x](/en/posts/claude-haiku-5-5-vs-gpt-6-luna)) and send non-urgent jobs through the Batch API at half price. If you resend the same long context, [prompt caching in the Claude API](/en/posts/claude-api-prompt-caching-guide) bills cache hits at a fraction of the input price. For the full rate card, see [Claude API Pricing Per Million Tokens](/en/posts/claude-api-pricing-per-million-tokens).

On rate limits, members who receive credits "automatically get higher API rate limits," but Anthropic gives no figures. Standard Console organizations move through usage tiers with monthly spend caps: $500 at Start and $1,000 at Build. [Claude API Quota Tiers and Limits Explained](/en/posts/claude-api-quota-tiers-limits) covers what each tier allows.

## Do the new Team monthly API credits apply to the free Startups year?

Possibly, but Anthropic hasn't said so. Since October 7, 2026, [Claude Team plans include monthly API credits](https://docs.claude.com/en/docs/about-claude/api-credits-for-subscribers): $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, pooled and capped at $500 a month. The doc lists "discounted Team plans" as eligible but names only the Nonprofit and Scientists discounts. The free Startups year isn't mentioned.

Here's how those monthly credits work, so you know what to look for:

- A Team Owner or Primary Owner claims them under **Organization settings > Billing** after the plan has been active for 7 days, by linking a Console organization.
- They arrive monthly, expire at the end of each billing month, and don't roll over.
- They cover the Claude API, Managed Agents, the Agent SDK, and the playground. They don't cover Claude Code or extra usage in the Claude apps.
- Each plan links to one Console organization, each organization takes credits from one plan, and you can't change the link yourself.
- A linked organization moves to at least the Start usage tier, or at least Build if its monthly credit exceeds $200.

If an **API credits** section shows up in Billing a week after your free Team plan starts, you have them. With five Premium seats that would be $500 a month. With the default two Standard seats it would be $40. Link the same Console organization that holds your $1,000 startup credit unless you have a reason to separate projects. If the section never appears, the Team year still stands on its own, and Anthropic's doc tells eligible subscribers who don't see the credits to contact support.

## What Claude Team costs after the free year: $100 to $625 a month for five seats

Once the 12 months end, the plan bills at [Team list prices](https://claude.com/pricing). Team needs at least two members and you can mix seat types.

| Seats after year one | Billed annually | Billed monthly |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 5 Premium | $500/month ($6,000/year) | $625/month |
| 5 Standard | $100/month ($1,200/year) | $125/month |
| 1 Premium + 4 Standard | $180/month | $225/month |

Prices exclude tax. The useful decision at month 11 is which people actually need Premium-level usage. Anyone whose usage fits within a Standard seat can move to one at a fifth of the price. If your team mainly uses Cowork, [Claude Cowork Pricing: What You Actually Pay on Each Plan](/en/posts/claude-cowork-pricing) explains how it fits into each plan. API usage after the $1,000 expires is plain pay-as-you-go at the rates in the table above.

## Is Claude for Startups worth applying for?

For an eligible company, yes. The application is short, and with the seats set to the free mix, nothing is charged until the free year ends. The value lands differently depending on who you are:

- **You'd pay for Claude Team anyway.** The free year is the main prize: up to $6,000 at annual prices, or $7,500 at monthly prices.
- **You're building on the API.** The $1,000 is enough to wire up a product and run evals for six months on Sonnet 5.5 or Haiku 5.5. It won't fund a production launch on Opus 5.5 or Fable 5.1 for long.
- **You already have a Team plan.** The free year isn't available to your organization. The FAQ still says every approved company gets the $1,000 credit.
- **You're a solo developer without a company domain.** You'll fail the email check. A personal plan or pay-as-you-go API is the realistic route.

## Claude startup credits FAQ

### Are there free Claude credits available for startups?

Yes. Approved Claude Startups members get a one-time $1,000 in Claude API credits, valid for six months on the first-party Claude API. Startups backed by a VC in Anthropic's partner network can get up to $100K more through that VC.

### How do I claim the Claude $100 credit?

The $100 figure is most likely the monthly API credit that comes with Claude Max 5x, or the $100 per Premium seat on Claude Team. It isn't part of the startup offer. After 7 days on the plan, open **Settings > Billing** (Max) or **Organization settings > Billing** (Team) on claude.ai and link a Console organization in the **API credits** section. The credit expires at the end of each billing month and can't be spent on Claude Code.

### Do you get free credits with Claude?

Not on the Free or Pro plans, and there's no general free API tier. API credits come with Max and Team plans, through the Claude Startups program, or through Claude for Education plans at a university.

### What does Anthropic get in exchange for startup credits?

Publicity rights and a closer customer. The terms let Anthropic name your company and show its logo as a member, and ask you to consider quotes or co-marketing in good faith. The terms don't ask for equity.

### Can I use Claude startup credits on AWS Bedrock or Google Vertex AI?

No. The $1,000 only works on the first-party Claude API through Claude Console, not on AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or other third-party platforms.

### Is the Claude for Startups program open worldwide?

No. Companies established or operating in, owned more than 50% from, or serving people in excluded regions, including China and Russia, are ineligible under the program terms and Anthropic's ownership rule.
